The Patriots basketball teams have started their region games off on a good note. Both the girls and the boys teams are currently 2-1 in the region. The Patriots played Shaw High School on January 10th and Alexander High School on January 11th.

The Lady Patriots and the Patriots had similar mindsets entering the Shaw and Alexander games. “I had a positive mindset and I went into the game knowing that it may be tough, but that I would play hard despite not being 100% healthy and that we would bring home the win no matter what,” stated Lady Patriot Sydney Jarmon.  Javon Jackson added, “Entering the Shaw game I knew they weren’t as good as we were so we just wanted to take care of business and get back home.”

The Lady Patriots defeated Shaw by 22 points with a final score 55-32. The game of the week was against Alexander High school, who was 3-0 in the region. This game required the Lady Patriots to focus and mentally prepare for the game. Senior Sydney Jarmon stated,“I am just recently coming off of an injury so for my pre-game preparation I did a lot of icing and heat to get the swelling to go down. I made sure I got a lot of shots up earlier that day so that I could be prepared to take care of business. When it got close to game time I listened to my music and got my head right and focus on what I needed to do.” At tip-off, Alexander and the Lady Patriots battled trying to gain the lead. At one point in the game, Alexander was up by more than eight points. With key shots made by seniors Tyler Green and Jasmine Jones, the Lady Patriots gained the lead. In the fourth quarter, senior Diamond Robinson used  her energy and speed to make Alexander make some crucial turnovers. Junior Brianna Bailey moved Alexander’s 5’11 power forward, snatching rebounds right from her hands. The Lady Patriots played a hard game and came out with the win with a score of 57-46. “It feels good to have the two wins. We had a rough start and now we are beginning to get it together and play how we are supposed to play as a team,” stated Jarmon.

The Patriots had two very exciting games with dunks, incredible steals, and clutch three pointers. Shaw was a very exciting game. Sandy Creek tested Shaw’s speed and ball handling with lock down defense and ball pressure out of this world. The Patriots’ defeated Shaw 76-70. Sophomore Javon Jackson had an incredible game. Jackson used his clutch three point shooting to keep the Patriots in the game against Alexander. The Patriots went into three overtimes. During the first overtime, senior Brandon Lindsey made a short range two tieing up the game once again.  In the second overtime, they almost didn’t make it. Javon Jackson shot and made a three at the buzzer stirring up  a roar from excited Sandy Creek fans and students. “I prepared mentally for overtime by just relaxing and not worrying about the score, playing like the score was 0 to 0,” stated Jackson.  In the last overtime fans were eager to see how this game would turnout. Unfortunately, the Patriots came up short losing with a score of 74-94.

Both boys and girls have tough games for the next couple of weeks. Friday, January 17th they will play Carrollton High School and January 18th they will play Whitewater High School. “They can expect a W for both games and us not losing at home for the rest of the year. Hopefully a lot of fans come out and support,” stated Jackson. Jarmon added, “Fans can expect a good game and we are definitely going to be trying to take the W Friday night.” Come out and support the Sandy Creek Patriots as they host Carrollton and Whitewater this weekend.
